Commercials about fizzy, sweetened drinks paint a rosy, appealing picture about the drinks but in reality such artificial drinks can cause a number of health risks. Carbonated and artificially sweetened drinks usually have zero nutritional value and can increase the risk of certain types of cancer, heart disease, liver damage, weight gain and even cause premature aging. Let us look at these claims in detail.

Risk of cancer

Chemicals used in soft drinks (to add colour) can cause cancer. A number of studies conducted by various teams suggest that too many sugary drinks increases the amount of insulin produced in the pancreas and double the risk of pancreatic cancer. Another study has found out that drinking just one carbonated drink a day increases the risk of prostate cancer by approximately 40 percent.

Risk of heart disease

US scientists claim a connection between daily caloric intake from food that contains excessive amounts of sugar such as carbonated drinks and death rates from cardiovascular disease.

Risk of diabetes

During the last few decades the number of new cases of Type 2 diabetes has increased significantly. A study conducted between the year 1990 and 2000 found a correlation between sweetened drinks and new cases of diabetes.

Liver damage

Several studies conducted in the US during the latter part of the last decade found a link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the consumption of sugary, fizzy drinks. One of the studies claims that even if you drink just two cans of soft drinks a day that could lead to liver damage.

Weight gain

When you drink carbonated, commercial drinks instead of water your body gets loaded with added sugar and calories which will inevitably lead to weight gain.

Premature aging

Carbonated drinks contain phosphates (an inorganic chemical and a salt) which has been found to speed up the aging process. It is not just about you looking old and grey but also about the health issues that crop up when your body goes through the processes of aging .

If you want to stay healthy, fit and younger longer, stay off those sweetened, carbonated drinks however much they tempt you with their appeal.
